Program Overview

The University of Veliko Turnovo is one of the major universities in Bulgaria, re-established in 1963. It has 11 colleges: Business Education, Fine Arts, History, Law, Math and Computer Science, Philology, Philosophy, Public Health, Theology, and a Center for Physical Education and Sports. The university has additional campuses in the cities of Vraca and Pleven. The total number of students in Veliko Turnovo is approximately 11,000. The university offers undergraduate and graduate degrees in 64 fields of study. It is fully accredited by the Ministry of Higher Education in Bulgaria. Veliko Turnovo is in northern Bulgaria, 160 miles east of Sofia, the capital of Bulgaria.

The program is designed for students interested in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages, and to students interested in Balkan Studies. Experience has shown that this offers excellent preparation for students interested in pursuing a graduate degree in ESL, in applying to the Peace Corps, or in seeking employment in the field of international education. The academic program provides immersion in Bulgarian culture and language, as well as the opportunity to gain hands-on experience as an English instructor. Students teach at the university under the supervision of faculty members from the English Department. Students can develop professional teaching skills, and experience Bulgarian life from the perspective of a student as well as a working professional. A 3.0 GPA on a 4.0 scale, transcripts, and three letters of recommendation are required for admission to this program, which is open to juniors and seniors.

Teaching Internship (6 credits) In English:

Students teach English language classes at the University. The type of classes taught varies from conversation classes for advanced students to elementary English classes.

This program offers a valuable internship in teaching English and the student is immersed in the Bulgarian Culture.

Costs

Semester: $4,250 CCIS

Non-CCIS - $4,550

Truman requires a $300 deposit, deducted from total amount due, upon acceptance to the program, but does not have an application fee.

 

Costs Included

Instructional costs abroad, CCIS and sponsor fees, health insurance, room and board, orientation in Bulgaria.

Costs Not Included

Estimated:  Airfare ($2,000), passport and visa, personal costs ($2,500).

Start the CCIS Study Abroad application process by downloading the forms. To download, right click on the application or recommendation form and click "save as", then save the form to your desktop or downloads. Once you have completed your form, SAVE IT FIRST!!!! DO NOT CLICK "SUBMIT" until you have SAVED your form or the recipient will receive a BLANK form. Once you have saved it, click "submit" and THEN email your completed form as an attachment to the contact email address associated with the program in which you are applying. If for some reason you do not see the email address pop up when you click "submit", then email the application to the program sponsor listed here on this page.
