Program Overview

The University of Veliko Turnovo is one of the major universities in Bulgaria, re-established in 1963. It has 11 colleges: Business Education, Fine Arts, History, Law, Math and Computer Science, Philology, Philosophy, Public Health, Theology, and a Center for Physical Education and Sports. The university has additional campuses in the cities of Vraca and Pleven. The total number of students in Veliko Turnovo is approximately 11,000. The university offers undergraduate and graduate degrees in 64 fields of study. It is fully accredited by the Ministry of Higher Education in Bulgaria. Veliko Turnovo is in northern Bulgaria, 160 miles east of Sofia, the capital of Bulgaria.

Course Offerings

The summer program at the Ujniversity of Veliko Turnovo is an International Seminar.  It celebrated its 30th Anniversary in 2007.  It is designed to bring together people interested in Bulgarian Culture and Civilization, and in Balkan Studies in general.  While no previous knowledge of Bulgarian language is required, most participants have experience and/or expertise in the field of Slavic/Balkan studies.

During the seminar participants will enroll in Bulgarian language classes (from true beginners to advanced,) attend a series of lectures on Bulgarian history, culture and society, and participate in a specialized seminar on one of the following.

Bulgarian folklore and ethnography, Bulgarian history in a Balkan and European context, current socio-historical issues, Old-Bulgarian language and the history of the Bulgarian language, Bulgarian literature, or Contemporary Bulgarian language

In addition to this, qualified faculty members from the university are available during the entire seminar for private or group conferences on issues related to Bulgarian language and other Slavic and or Balkan languages; Bulgarian history; Bulgarian literature.

 

Academic Highlights

The seminar offers classes in Bulgarian folk dance, and a very rich cultural program including visit to historical/artistic sites, museums, and meetings with visual artists, writers, musicians, poets, and other.  Participants attend concerts, exhibits, and variety shows depending on the summer offerings. 

The program includes excursions in and around Veliko Turnovo.

3.0 GPA on a 4.0 scale; junior or senior standing; transcripts; two letters of recommendation; minimum age of 18 years

Costs

$1,800 CCIS members

$2,100 non-CCIS members

Truman requires a $300 deposit, deducted from total amount due, upon acceptance to the program, but does not have an application fee.

Costs Included

Instructional costs, CCIS and sponsor fees, room and board, health insurance, books.

Costs Not Included

Estimated:  Airfare ($1,500), passport and visa, personal costs ($1,250)

Start the CCIS Study Abroad application process by downloading the forms. To download, right click on the application or recommendation form and click "save as", then save the form to your desktop or downloads. Once you have completed your form, SAVE IT FIRST!!!! DO NOT CLICK "SUBMIT" until you have SAVED your form or the recipient will receive a BLANK form. Once you have saved it, click "submit" and THEN email your completed form as an attachment to the contact email address associated with the program in which you are applying. If for some reason you do not see the email address pop up when you click "submit", then email the application to the program sponsor listed here on this page.

YOU MUST NOTIFY YOUR HOME INSTITUTIONS' STUDY ABROAD OFFICE OR ADVISOR OF YOUR INTENTIONS AND ALSO PROVIDE THEM WITH A COPY OF YOUR APPLICATION.
