Program Overview

The University of Limerick was established in 1972 as the National Institute for Higher Education, Limerick and classified as the University of Limerick in 1989. Limerick is an independent, internationally focused university with over 10,500 students. It is a young, energetic and enterprising university with a proud record of innovation in education and excellence in research. Limerick is situated on a superb riverside campus of over 131 hectares with the River Shannon as a unifying focal point. Outstanding recreational, cultural and sporting facilities further enhance this exceptional learning and working environment. The University of Limerick is a vibrant and rapidly growing community of scholars located 5km from Limerick City and 20km from Shannon International Airport and with a campus enrollment of some 10,534 students.

The University of Limerick is located in Limerick, the third largest city in Ireland.  Founded as a Viking fortress over a thousand years ago, Limerick today contains many architectural reminders of the city's past and offers a variety of cultural, artistic and theatrical events for students.  Galway, Clare, Cork, Tipperary, Dublin and Kerry are all within a day's excursion from Limerick.  The University of Limerick site was formerly a great estate on the banks of the river Shannon, three miles from Limerick city.  Facilities include modern, well-equipped classrooms, a student center with a theater and an art gallery.  The University has gained a national reputation for its programs in Business and Engineering, and its campus offers modern, state-of-the-art technology in its programs.

Course Offerings

The study abroad program at the University of Limerick is designed to meet the learning needs of American and other foreign students. Students may choose from hundreds of fully integrated courses at the University in the following Faculties: College of Humanities, College of Business, College of Engineering and Science, and College of Education. Course offerings are provided well in advance in order for students to choose from the wide range of courses available.

Student Life

The program immerses students into the academic and social life of the university by providing field trips and on-campus activities. Student activities include 60 student-run clubs & societies with almost two thirds made up of sporting clubs on campus. The support network within the University of Limerick allows these Clubs & Societies to avail of the resources on offer from the Students Union, the University of Limerick Sports Department and the University of Limerick Arts Office. All are independently run, but liaise closely regarding the promotion of student run clubs and societies. The student clubs include Aikido, archery, Athletics, Athletics, Badminton, Basketball, Chess, Golf, Hurling, Karate Shotokan, Kayak, Kickboxing, Ladies Rugby, LiathróidLaimhe, Men's Rugby, Mountain Bike, Outdoor Pursuit, Rowing, Sailing, SkydiveUL, Soccer, Softball, Sub Aqua, Tae Kwon Do, Trampoline, UL Vikings, volleyball, Water Polo, and Windsurfing. Besides student clubs, there are many societies that are available in the University of Limerick. These societies include: Christian Union, Comedy, Computer, Cumann Gaelach, Debating Union, DJ, Drama, Environmental, Free Palestine, GSoc, History Society, Irish Peace, Law, Music Soc, ÓgraFiannaFáil, Out in UL, Photographic, Poker, SVP, Trad Music, and Young Fine Gael.

Housing

Students live in the University’s Plassey, Kilmurry, Thomond, Cappavila, and Dromroe apartment complexes with approximately 2,000 rooms. Restaurants, Cafes and bars, and Retail services are also available as on-campus accommodation. Students live with Irish students and other students from throughout the European Community in a variety of University villages.  Individual two-story terraced houses with 4-8 bedrooms are arranged in landscaped courtyards in an attractive village style.  Each house offers single study bedrooms, a large kitchen/living room and two showers.

Duration

Fall 2013  Semester – September 5-December 20, 2013 Orientation: September 5-6. Students arrival dates:  September 3, 4                                                                                                      Spring Semester 2014 - January 23 to April 21, 2014.  Students arrival dates:  January 21, 22.

Eligibility Requirements

Program is open to students at all undergraduate levels with a 2.9 GPA.

Costs

$8,520 CCIS members

$8,820 non-CCIS members

Truman requires a $300 deposit deducted from total amount due, upon acceptance to the program, but does not have an application fee.

Costs Included

Instructional costs, CCIS and sponsor fees, field trips and health insurance.

Costs Not Included

Estimated:  Passport, Irish immigration fees ($420), room and meals ($4,000-7000), books, airfare ($1,500), and personal expenses ($2,500)

How do I apply?

Start the CCIS Study Abroad application process by downloading the forms. To download, right click on the application or recommendation form and click "save as", then save the form to your desktop or downloads. Once you have completed your form, SAVE IT FIRST!!!! DO NOT CLICK "SUBMIT" until you have SAVED your form or the recipient will receive a BLANK form. Once you have saved it, click "submit" and THEN email your completed form as an attachment to the contact email address associated with the program in which you are applying. If for some reason you do not see the email address pop up when you click "submit", then email the application to the program sponsor listed here on this page.

YOU MUST NOTIFY YOUR HOME INSTITUTIONS' STUDY ABROAD OFFICE OR ADVISOR OF YOUR INTENTIONS AND ALSO PROVIDE THEM WITH A COPY OF YOUR APPLICATION.

In addition to the CCIS application and two academic references the following materials are required:

1.  Up-to-date original transcript

2.  Copy of birth certificate/or copy of passport information pages

3.  Character-reference of a current date from a full-time staff member of the University/College you are attending or other person of standing who knows your personally.

4.  The names of two academic referees to whom enquires as to you academic standing may be addressed, if necessary.

5.  A statement as to how you see your proposed courses of study in this University tying in with previous studies and with your future academic/vocational objectives.

6.  Passport sized photograph.
