Program Overview

Guayaquil, the largest city in Ecuador with nearly three million inhabitants, is the commercial, industrial, and import export hub of the country. Situated on the Guayas River and the Pacific coast, Guayaquil is known for its contagious informality, lively social life, and year-round tropical weather. Guayaquil, known as the Pacific Pearl, is the main port of Ecuador. Malécon 2000, the largest architectural development in the last century of Guayaquil;s history, is a waterfront boardwalk that runs from Cuenca Street in the south of the city, all the way to Barrio las Peñas on the north.

The Universidad Católica de Santiago de Guayaquil is a private, non-profit institution of higher learning that achieved high prestige in the community. Católica has an attractive campus and a very active student life, including numerous social and recreational facilities as well as computer labs. The campus is served by public transportation. More than 5,500 students are enrolled in degree programs such as Architecture, Law, Business, Sociology, Education, Literature, Communications, Psychology, Economics and Engineering.

La Universidad Catulica de Santiago de Guayaquil is located in the commercial, import-export hub of Ecuador. La Universidad Catulica is a private, non-profit institution of higher learning that has achieved high prestige in the community. Catulica has an attractive campus and a very active student life, including numerous social and recreational facilities as well as computer labs. The campus is served by public transportation. More than 5,500 students are enrolled in degree programs such as Architecture, Law, Business, Sociology, Education, Literature, Communications, Psychology, Economics and Engineering.

The program combines intensive Spanish language instruction (beginning through advanced) with the study of Ecuadorian history and culture. Students earn 7 credits in Spanish language in the short-term sessions. In addition to a 4 credit core Spanish course, students take a 3 credit Special Topics Conversation class that takes advantage of the city and local culture. A GPA of 2.5, as well as an official transcript, two letters of recommendation, and a statement of purpose are required for admission to the program, which is open to students from freshman through graduate level standing.

Academic Program

In the four-week programs offered in January and July, students are introduced to Ecuador by
combining intensive Spanish language and Ecuadorian culture study with home0stay
arrangements and organized field trips. Students enroll in two courses for six to eight credits.
Spanish instruction places a heavy emphasis upon oral communication and uses an interaction
methodology. CCIS students receive personalized attention in the small classes ranging from
two to eight students.

Activities and Opportunities

Student Life

All programs participants live with Ecuadorian host families. The arrangement gives each participant the opportunity to learn about Ecuadorian culture first-hand. Students gain support in the new country from interaction with the family while following the host family's customs including; eating meals, respecting host norms, and being sensitive to Ecuadorian culture.

Ecuadorian food consists mainly of soup and stews, corn pancakes, rice, eggs, and vegetables. Seafood is particularly good, even in the highlands.

Field Trips & Excursions
In addition to tours of Guayaquil, field trips within Ecuador are organized during the semester and short-term programs. Since Ecuador is blessed with environmental, geographical, and cultural diversity, these field excursions are designed to introduce students to "another" Ecuador. Semester trips may include a visit to Spanish colonial cities of Quito or Cuenca. Short-term programs may include trips to coastal beach towns like Salinas.

Instructional costs abroad, room and partial board, administrative fees, field trips, pre-departure

Airfare ($500-$800), books ($50-$150), personal costs ($200-$500), visa ($0-$100), and school
of record fee if applicable.
