Germany: Heidelberg ILP Semester

The Intensive German Language Program is offered at all levels by highly trained, qualified, university-educated native speakers of German. Direct foreign language methodology is combined with the latest state-of-the-arts in audio-visual equipment.
CP teachers hold university degrees and have teaching experience in German as a Foreign language. They speak one or more foreign languages themselves and have experience working with people from various countries and backgrounds.

The language of instruction is German — right from the very first lesson. You will learn German with authentic texts and in communicative situations.
Students register for twelve American college credits, with 25 hours of instruction per week, and a total number of 200 contact hours during the eight week semester.

Participants with knowledge of German will be asked to take a written placement test approximately 2 weeks before the course starts and they will need to return the test to the Collegium Palatinum before their course begins. An oral test will take place on the first day of classes.

Course Offerings

Courses are offered at Beginning, Intermediate and Advanced levels and include Grammar, Conversation, Idioms and Stylistics, Composition and Text Analysis.  Courses in German History and Geography are also offered to advanced students.

 

Student Life

Students may choose from a variety of housing options, including institutional residential facilities, where students cook for themselves and have either a double or single room, with showers, bathrooms and kitchens located on each floor. Private accommodation with host families or in a private apartment can be arranged for those participants contemplating a longer stay in Heidelberg who are looking for exposure to everyday life in Germany. Accommodation in private homes is available with or without a meal plan. For transitional periods before and after the regular semester, there is also the hostel option for participants who would like to choose from the many hostels in Heidelberg. The German-American Institute, located across from the Villa Manesse, offers students a library, lectures, films and cultural events. Recreational activities include guided tours in and around Heidelberg, visits to cultural and historic sites, museums, sports and social events.

Duration

8-week sessions run year-round
Absolute beginners may only participate in sessions beginning in September, January and June.

Open to students at all undergraduate levels with a 2.5 GPA

Instructional costs abroad, fees, orientation, health and accident insurance

Costs Not Included

Airfare, room and board (dormitories: $915 - $1,230 + $375 deposit; home stay: $1,950), personal costs, residence permit ($50), bus pass ($46/month), meals and incidentals ($150/week), textbooks ($50), land transportation ($100).

All students need to submit the following materials to the Center for International Education at St. Ambrose University:

• Completed CCIS Application
• Statement of Purpose (500 words)
• Two confidential references (at least one of which must be from an academic source)
• Official transcript of prior/current coursework
• $25 application fee (payable to St. Ambrose University) only for students from non-CCIS institutions
