American University of Rome in Rome

Founded in 1969 as an independent, coeducational, four-year institution, The American University of Rome is located in a beautiful villa on Rome’s highest hill, the Janiculum, on the right bank of the Tiber River.  The four-story villa and an adjacent five-story building have a complete range of facilities, including classrooms, art and design studios, a student lounge, computer laboratories, faculty and administrative offices and classrooms.  Off-campus facilities include a one-hundred seat auditorium an art studio, design and architecture studios, faculty office, and the library.  Surrounded by its own garden, the campus is close to major parks of Villa Sciarra and Villa Pamphili, and the renowned American Academy.  The university has an international enrollment of approximate 550 students each year, and its faculty comes from leading educational, business, and government centers throughout Europe and the United States. 

Course Offerings

Students may take 12 to 16 credits in a variety of disciplines, including one required course in Italian Language, which is offered at all levels, from beginning through advanced.  No previous knowledge of Italian is required.  The language of instruction is English, with the exception of Italian language and literature courses unless the literature course is designated, “in translation.”

Classes are small, with emphasis on student-teacher interaction.  The university offers course work in several disciplines, including: History, Italian Language and Literature, Art History, Communications, Business, International Business, and International Relations.  A limited number of internships for students, fluent in Italian and who participate in the program for an academic year can be arranged upon request and are offered at international law firms, multinational companies, and international organizations like the Fulbright Commission. 

 

Student Life

Although the university does not have its own residence halls, students may elect for AUR to arrange housing for them.  Students who choose AUR facilitated housing are place in furnished apartments in areas surround the university.  Students are responsible for their own meals.  As a complement to the academic program, students participate in mandatory course-related field visits.  In addition, optional excursions are offered by the Student Life Department to places such as Venice, Pompeii, Florence, Assisi.

Eligibility Requirements

A 2.5 GPA, official transcripts, two letters of recommendation, and a statement of purpose are necessary for admission to the program. Students must be 18 years old. No previous knowledge of Italian is required.

Non-Resident: Contact the College of Staten Island

Costs Included

Tuition and administrative fees, orientation in US and Italy, sickness and accident insurance

Costs Not Included

Airfare ($1200), books ($360), room ($5,195 - $6,335), meals ($1700), course related fees ($75), optional field trips ($30-$300), personal costs ($1700), and school of record fee.

Students from CCIS member institutions apply through home campus; students from non-member institutions enroll through Broome Community College/SUNY or other appropriate CCIS member institution.
