Spain: Seville Summer

Program Overview

Located in Seville, this program draws upon the resources of both the University of Seville and the International College of Seville (ICS). Both border a beautiful park near the center of the city, with easy access to the many cultural and historical attractions of Seville. In addition to the historical sites such as churches, palaces and museums, Seville also has modern transportation, many hotels and restaurants, and theatres. Founded in the sixteenth century, the University of Seville, with a student body of over 70,000, is one of the top-ranked universities in Spain. The International College of Seville (ICS), founded in 1982, is a private educational institute with its own classrooms, library, and study areas. It provides a full range of academic advising and student services, as well as numerous activities designed to complement the academic program.

The International College of Seville in Seville

The University of Seville, founded in 1551, is one of the leading institutions of Spain's higher education system. Its Schools of Philology, Geography and History, Philosophy, Biology and Engineering and its many schools and technological institutes serve the educational needs of some 70,000 students.

Located in the downtown area, the University's main building is bordered by the Maria Luisa Park and the Guadalquivir River. This building, the completely remodeled historic Tobacco Factory, houses the Schools of Geography and History, Philology, Law, and the main administrative offices. ICS students enrolled at the University of Seville will appreciate attending classes in the imposing 18th Century building immortalized by Bizet's opera "Carmen" and by 19th Century travellers in search of Romantic Spain. The building, complete with moat and watchtowers, is evidence of the importance given to protecting the King's lucrative tobacco monopoly, which at the time manufactured of all of Europe's cigars.

Course Offerings

Spanish language (all levels), Culture and Society of Spain
Recommended Credits: 6 credits

For current University of Seville course information, visit The International College of Seville website and click "Calendar & Schedule".

Academic Highlights

Students attending the four-week summer program will enroll in one Spanish language class (beginning, intermediate, or advanced) and the Culture and Society of Spain or a history of The Three Cultures of Spain: Jews, Muslims, and Christians. Each course is offered for 3 credits; summer students will earn 6 semester hours credit total."

The academic program provides an opportunity to experience and understand Spanish society and its institutions through direct exposure to Spain's history, art and contemporary society. The program provides excellent preparation for students planning to work in fields requiring a knowledge of Spanish language and culture. Students are encouraged to make full use of the human and material resources in Seville and to build an active life in the community. Although extracurricular activities are encouraged and personal travel is a major contributor to the students' European experience, attendance to class is mandatory. A complete field trip package is included in the summer program.

A one-day Orientation session is conducted at the ICS at the beginning of the program. This session introduces the student to the country, the culture, and the academic program while also providing practical information about daily living in Seville. All students take a Spanish Proficiency Test before being placed in a Spanish language course.

While ample time is available for travel and relaxation, students are expected to attend classes regularly, study and perform academically to the best of their abilities. Student interviews are held regularly with the Director and with the Director of Academic Affairs of the ICS Center. Students are encouraged to see them any time a problem arises.

Activities and Opportunities

Student Life

Students have the option of living with Spanish families, or in program-arranged residencias. Homestay is very much encouraged as the optimal way of becoming immersed in the culture. The type of meal plan varies with the type of accommodation chosen, and in homestay arrangements the cost of laundry is included. Students must stay in housing arranged by the program. All students are encouraged to participate in a program which offers a chance to meet Spanish students and practice the language. There is a co-curricular cultural program featuring trips to local events and places as well as travel in the region. Students may participate in a variety of sports. Staff members are bilingual and trained in student services.

Alumni Feedback

Larissa Waden
"It's one of the most beautiful cities I've ever seen. At night I sometimes believe I'm living in a jewelry box while looking at all the illuminated buildings and bridges. But all the precious stones in the world couldn't measure up to something as grand as Sevilla! I pinch myself at least once a day and so far I haven't woken up (Thank God!). And to be quite honest, I'm already dreading coming home."

Rebeckah Sokolowski
"What a way to end four years of college! I'm amazed at how much I have learned and experienced here in Seville. The fun that I have had with my house family, friends, and professors will be life-long memories. I could not be more satisfied with my decision to study abroad with CCIS."

Carley Berkey
“The semester in Sevilla is like a tapa, a small taste of the colorful, passionate vida andaluza, inviting round after round to be discovered. The program provides a "puerta abierta" for students. They take care of all the details and concerns, and leave it up to the students to embrace and integrate into Spanish culture - an opportunity not to be passed up.”

Rufino Hurtado
“Sevilla is not about yesterday, and not about tomorrow. It is about today...and every day is beautiful in Sevilla. By the way, for all of you who live in the cold northern parts of the States like I do, there are palm trees in Sevilla; lots of ‘em!!"

Kim Villarosa
“My study abroad experience in Sevilla was the best experience in my life. It was so nice to have great people at the Center to go to to help for information about the surrounding areas and cultural events in Sevilla. I couldn't ask for a better housing arrangement. My Spanish sister treated my like one of her own friends! I made many Spanish friends through my intercambio, which was a perfect outlet to the Spanish life!”

Brianna Kochick
“Sevilla is an amazing city, rich in culture and history and the classes at the ICS complement all there is to learn. The school is situated in a beautiful, charming neighborhood near the María Luisa Park, surrounded by quaint cafés that are perfect for meeting with friends to enjoy tapas and study. The staff is wonderful, friendly and caring. The classes are small and the professors are not only enthusiastic and passionate about teaching, but also personable and dedicated to giving the students a better understanding of Spain and it’s culture. The staff at the ICS were professional and happy to answer all of my questions. It is an adventure, an eye-opening, tremendous learning experience and I highly recommend it to everyone.”

Penelope Lambropoulos
“My semester in Sevilla was extraordinary and an experience that I will never forget. When I decided to study abroad, I did not expect to fall in love with the city and the people. I met some of my best friends in Sevilla and I am still keeping in close contact with them. I will never forget how hospitable and helpful they were towards me and I left Sevilla feeling more like a native than a tourist. The classes were great. The professors were well prepared and very informative. I would recommend the program to everyone.”

David Forgues
“My semester in Spain was one of the best experiences I have ever had. I loved my host family and would definitely recommend a home stay. The highlight of many days in Sevilla was the afternoon meal and several hours of conversation with my Spanish hosts. Sevilla is a wonderful city with much to see and do. Classes were interesting and challenging. I traveled almost every weekend to places around Andalucía. I still keep in touch with 4 or 5 people who I met on the program. In my current work with college students I recommend study abroad and Spain to all of the them because of the great experience I had!”

Will Baird
“What can I say about this program that hasn’t already been said - I enjoyed every minute of it. Before departure one receives information telling you about homesickness and culture shock but I donÌt think these things are an issue in a city like Seville. The "duende" of the Sevillanos shines. The historical visits are places I will always remember. Every teacher at the Center had one thing in common: They contained a passion in their subjects that shined through each lesson. Class was surprisingly fun - you learned about relevant subjects, while at the same time enjoying every minute of it.”

Craig Tichelkamp
“My time in Spain has been an awesome experience mainly because of the people IÌve met here. IÌve made friendships with Spaniards, American students and other internationals who happen to be in this beautiful city. Meeting these people has expanded my world view and made me very grateful for the chance to come to Seville.”

Will Lawson
“Studying Abroad in Seville was perhaps the BEST experience of my life. Immersing myself into a culture different from my own really brought out qualities about myself that I didn't know were there and probably never would have found. I had a great housemother. She was really a mother to us and gave us a 'home away from home'. Seville is a great city with lots to do and see. The school was fun and challenging and I really got a lot out of the classes.”

Pamela Ortiz
I would like to thank you and the rest of the CCIS program in Seville for making this happen for me. I learned a lot of things while I stayed in Seville, if I had the opportunity to do it all over again, I wouldn't even think about it twice, I would jump ahead and do it again. Once again thanks for being that bridge that connected me with my long time dream (visitar Espana y sobre todo Sevilla!!!)
