Program Overview

The Spanish Culture January Term Seminar is hosted by the International College of Seville (ICS) and is designed for students wishing to deepen their understanding and appreciation of Spain, and its culture and customs. Students will live with local Spanish hosts in Seville, study Spanish society, history and culture, and participate in cultural activities such as flamenco shows, cooking classes, city walking tours, boat cruises, tapas-tastings, and traditional 3 Kings day celebration. Faculty members, as well as local guides and specialists, will deepen students' understanding of the language, people, customs, and culture of Spain in a hands-on experiential learning.

The ICS has been welcoming international students since 1982. Its campus is located in the traditional “El Porvenir” neighborhood and borders the Maria Luisa Park near the center of the city, with easy access to the many cultural and historical attractions of Seville. In addition to historical sites such as churches, palaces, and museums, Seville also has modern transportation, excellent restaurants and hotels, numerous theaters, and state-of-the-art sports facilities.

The program provides an excellent introduction to Spanish history and culture for students pursuing degrees in humanities history, political science, international relations, social studies, and art. However, this program welcomes students from all academic majors who are eager to learn about the history of Spain in one of its most iconic cities.

As part of the experiential learning opportunities offered students will enjoy cultural activities, such as city visits to the Royal Palace of the Alcázar, the Cathedral, Plaza de España and Plaza de América, and the ancient Islamic and Jewish quarters; a day trip to historic Cordoba and an overnight trip to the city of Granada.

Academic Highlights
The ICS J-Term program provides students with an opportunity to experience and understand Spanish society and its institutions through direct exposure to Spain’s history, art, and contemporary society.

The International College of Seville (ICS) is a private, independent, cultural association whose basic aim is to serve as a center for the promotion of international education. The ICS was previously known as Institute of International Studies, an institution founded in 1982 and offering, in cooperation with different U.S universities and colleges and the Faculties of Philology and Geography & History at the University of Seville, a multi-faceted program for students wishing to study in Spain.

The classrooms, a reference library, TV room, Internet facilities, study areas and administrative offices occupy a three-story Andalusian villa located in the charming neighborhood of El Porvenir and next to the beautiful María Luisa Park.

All ICS families live in either the same small neighborhood of El Porvenir as the ICS is located or at a short walking distance (5 – 15 minutes). Like other Europeans, most Spaniards live in apartment buildings. Each homestay generally takes in two students and the students are made to feel like members of the family. Homestays provide 3 daily meals, 7 days-a-week, and laundry once a week.
