Program Overview

Students are invited to study during fall, spring, and summer at the USIL Extension Campus in Cusco, the site of the historic capital of the Inca Empire. Cusco is located about an hour flight from Lima and has half a million residents.

Students take Spanish classes or coursework in English in a stunning 16th-century building with ancient Incan stones lining the walls which are a short walk from the center square. In addition to classrooms and administrative offices, the school offers WI-FI, a computer lab, student lounge, courtyard, and garden. The city is adorned with architectural marvels, cobblestone streets, and serves as the gateway to Machu Picchu—one of the New Seven Wonders of the World!

Student Life & Housing

Student Life
With salsa lessons, soccer matches, service-learning opportunities, cultural workshops, and more, students have a wealth of opportunities available to them at the school. Cusco itself, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, boasts a world famous cathedral, beautiful churches and museums such as the Museum of Precolombian Art, and the center for traditional Cusqueño textiles. Travel within the region is convenient and affordable, and program staff and faculty are more than happy to provide excellent recommendations for exploring all Peru has to offer.

Volunteering and Service Learning
One of USIL's institutional pillars is volunteering and sustainability. The Cusco Extension center is a regional leader in developing and implementing a wide array of service-learning initiatives. Students will have the option to volunteer at different organizations based on their interests including an aminal shelter, rural schools or the Cusco historical preservation society. During semester terms students can also opt to take an introduction to service-learning course where they will learn about their Cusco's socio-economic and cultural background and develop a sustainable project to address a local problem.

Housing
Students are placed with local host families for a true cultural and language immersive experience. Students are provided their own room and three meals a day, seven days a week. Homestays are located 10-25 minutes away from the city center and the USIL campus. Students will be picked up from the airport in Cusco by their host families and will be dropped off at the airport upon departure. There is onsite support in Cusco to ensure students are happy and healthy in their accommodations.
