Academics & Program

Course: EVN3190: Tropical Marine Biology Field Program (4-5 credits)
Language of Instruction: English

The objective of this course is to obtain a general comprehension of concepts, issues, and applications pertinent to tropical marine biology. Participants will study Costa Rican marine ecosystems, biodiversity, and environmental issues through field trips to coral reefs, sandy and muddy beaches, mangroves, and estuaries. Students will also learn about the integrated coastal management approach and some cases of studies.

Online learning component: Due to the intensity and in-country experiential aspect of this program participants must complete online readings and a group presentation prior to their arrival to Costa Rica. Readings, assignments and discussion boards will be hosted inside Verita’s learning management system and will take place the month before (December) prior to the field component.

In-country component: Once in Costa Rica students will immerse in the Costa Rica culture attending classes at the university and living with host families. However, most of the time in Costa Rica will be spent in field excursions and lab work in Veritas and around the country. Fieldwork outings are mandatory as they are an integral part of the program. Some fieldwork excursions include Playa Tortuga Reserve (turtle and marine ray study), Curú Wildlife reserve (sustainable fisheries), and many more!
