Program Overview

Study or Study and Intern in London for a Semester

Study, intern, and explore! FIE’s program in London gives students the opportunity to experience firsthand this complex society through interdisciplinary coursework as well as tailored academic internships. Students take an FIE Key Course, focusing on an aspect of British Life such as British Life and Business; Visual Media; Europe or Culture; two to three elective courses, and choose one of two pathways: Study or Study & Internship.

With FIE London you can pursue studies for just about any major imaginable with elective courses available in business, communications, history, literature, politics, theater, music, health, writing and much more. Field trips, guest lectures by London-based specialists, site visits and other program activities are integrated into all FIE courses. Through FIE, you can arrange your semester to fit your academic goals while also doing an internship with a small-to-mid size British company or non-profit.

With FIE London you can pursue studies for just about any major imaginable. Students can choose from over 30 electives from these options:

Unless otherwise specified by their home institution, most students in London enroll in one of FIE's Key Courses, which analyze British life through a particular lens (Business, Culture, Europe, or Visual Media). In these courses, students contextualize their experience in London. Students participating in the Study & Internship or Study & Service Internship programs will be enrolled in a corresponding Experiential Education Course.

Fast-track your career in almost any field as you level-up with an international internship in London. Beyond impressive resume/CV additions, new office-friendly skills, and professional connections that’ll benefit your career loooooong after you return home, an international internship in London with FIE will stretch your comfort zone, deepen your understandings of the global marketplace, and inspire your future vocation.

 

Your studies are paired with an FIE internship placement at a small-to-medium sized London company. Classes include your International Internship Course (IIC), which integrates your internship with classroom seminars — the perfect setting for reflecting and analyzing your work experience. You will also take an FIE Key Course and can sign up for optional electives (depending on your program term).

Academics Information:

Phase 1 (Weeks 1-7)

 
  • Required FIE Key Course meets for three hours per week.
  • Two or three other selected elective courses take place throughout the week.
  • During this period, students will interview for their internships, and placement sites are confirmed.

Week 8: Mid-semester break

 

Phase 2 (Weeks 9-15)

 
  • Classes meet two days per week.
  • The required FIE Key Course continues for three hours per week.
  • The International Internship Course (IIC) meets during Phase 2 as a space for reflection on the placement experience.
  • Some elective courses continue while others begin.
  • Internships are scheduled for three days per week. 

 

Student Life & Housing



Student Life


FIE is committed to providing students the opportunity to engage and explore their surroundings and offers optional field trips and study tours, many of which are highly discounted, outside of the academic excursions. Students are also informed of local cultural events and extra-curricular activities. Learn more here.

Housing

FIE’s student residences are located in some of the most vibrant and most sought after of London, a short Tube ride or walk away from Foundation House study center. All FIE student housing and study facilities are in the city center Zone 1 locality and well-serviced by the 24-hour public transport system. Residing in Zone 1 allows you to easily visit and familiarize yourself with all the city has to offer, from museums to clubs and cafes. In South Kensington, students live in fully-furnished converted 19th Century townhouses with one to three roommates. Common living and state-of-the-art kitchen areas in each residence allow students to interact frequently with each other. Costs Included: FIE tuition and fees, Comprehensive on-site orientation, Zones 1 and 2 Oyster Card London transport pass for the duration of the program, Internship placement and supervision (if that option is chosen), Wireless internet access in all FIE’s facilities, Comprehensive medical insurance, Self-catered student housing, Temporary Imperial College Student Union membership, International Student House membership, International Student Identity card with local and travel discounts, Page to Stage creative workshop, Various course-related co-curricular activities, Access to a subsidized calendar of extra-curricular events, Access to subsidized gym membership, 24-hour emergency support, administrative fees, orientation in the U.S., sickness and accident insurance, and access to counseling services.

Costs Not Included: Airfare: $1,000-1,500, Personal Expenses $100 per week, visa fees (if applicable), Meals (inexpensive meal options are offered to students, including self-catering and Imperial College of London Student Union Membership with access to University cafeterias), Optional field excursions, Independent travel and expenses

Withdraw Policy: 31 days prior to the first day of the program - 100% minus $400 deposit. 30 days or less prior to the first day of the program - 10% minus $400 deposit. No refund after program begins.

Eligibility & Deadlines

All application materials must be completed through the online application and/or received at the College of Staten Island by these dates. 

Scholarship Deadlines
Spring: September 15
Fall: March 15

Scholarship applications must be submitted through the FIE website directly and are due at 11:59 London time on the application deadline day. With time zone differences, for U.S.-based students that is typically 5 to 10 hours earlier than the time listed – check a time zone converter to be sure you know the deadline in your local area. Successful applicants will be notified within one week of the deadline.
 

Eligibility Requirements
- Students must have sophomore status to be eligible for the program
- 2.75 GPA or higher
- Official transcripts
- One letter of recommendation from a teacher who knows the applicant from a classroom setting
- Statement of purpose
- Students must be at least 18 years of age
