Program Overview

Venice is situated on 118 islands connected by 378 bridges. Called the Queen of the Adriatic, the city has a setting that no other city in the world can rival. It is a network of rii (streams), canali (canals), calli (streets), and campi (squares). The richness and charm of Venice does not derive solely from the presence of significant works of architecture and art (Bellini, Tiziano, Veronese, Tintoretto, Palladio, Sansovino, and many others) but also from the general layout of the city and its way of life.

The program is situated in the heart of Venice in a 16th century palazzo. The interior of the building has been recently restored for instructional purposes and is also a center for art and culture. It has ten standard classrooms, a modest library, and a communal meeting room. The Palazzo is located in the very center of the university and off the beaten part of tourists.

Academics & Program

Istituto Venezia in Venice

Academic Program Highlights

The purpose of the Italian language courses is to teach students both spoken and written Italian. The direct method is combined with grammar and syntax to give equal importance to the oral and written aspects. The summer super-intensive course is an intense, fast-moving course designed for students who wish to learn the language in all of its various aspects (speaking, reading, writing, and listening comprehension).

The course is divided into five different levels. Each level offers four hours (an academic hour = 50 minutes) of lessons per day, Mondays through Fridays.

Course Offerings

Super-intensive Italian language (80 hours, 6 credits)

Course Credits: Credit hours vary
Language of Instruction: Italian

Student Life & Housing

Student Life

Field Trips and Excursions

The Istituto Venezia organizes several activities during the week to give students the opportunity to make the most of their cultural experience in Venice. There are many walking tours with each focusing on different aspects of Venice – social life, cinema, cultural events, art, and other topics.

Housing and Meals

The Istituto Venezia arranges apartments for students located within walking distance or a vaporetto (water bus) ride from the Institute. Apartments are modest and they all have similar facilities, but no two apartments are alike. Each apartment is furnished and equipped with towels and bed linen, basic pots and pans, and kitchen utensils.

They are not provided with washing machines, telephones, and air conditioning. The housing coordinator at The Venice Institute assigns roommates based on the completed housing profile. Students are typically assigned to single bedrooms in the student apartments, which are shared with other students in the program or with local residents.

Adventures abroad

Natlee Hall

"I learned that it is important to travel; only then will one get a firsthand knowledge of people and their culture. It was very worthwhile. I was studying, but I was also exploring. I would definitely recommend the program to other students because it will broaden their horizons, but students must acquaint themselves with the language before travel."
