Academic Profile

The Institute of Youth in Moscow

The Institute of Youth is located in Moscow, a treasure house of Russian culture, featuring many art museums, theaters, concert halls, and public libraries. The Institute of Youth is located on a 150-acre site in the Vykhino district, known for its parks and gardens, with easy access from downtown Moscow by bus and subway. Numerous shops, a movie theater, a museum, and an open air market are all within close proximity. The Institute is a State/Private higher educational institute with an academic faculty of 200 scholars and researchers. Its modern, well-equipped buildings include classrooms with televisions and VCRs, and a large library.

Course Offerings

The Institute of Youth program seeks to involve students personally and actively with the Russian people and their language, history, art, and traditions. In addition to a required intensive Russian language course, which is taught at all levels by lecturers trained at the Pushkin Institute, students earn up to 15 undergraduate credits through the following courses offered at The Institute of Youth: Elementary through Advanced Russian Language, Russia Today, General Survey of Russian History and Lecture Series, Survey of Russian Literature (XIX-XX Centuries), Russian Musical History and Modern Life, and Survey of Russian Cultural History in Excursions. Russia Today is a unique weekly lecture series in which students dialogue with distinguished lecturers and political officials from throughout Russia. In addition to the academic curriculum, internships are open to students at any level of Russian, but some internships do have language requirements. A five-day excursion to St. Petersburg at the end of the semester is included in the program. The program is open to students at any undergraduate level with a 2.5 GPA.

 


Activities and Opportunities

Student Life

Students interact with Russian students on campus informally and on weekend cultural tours around Moscow, including theater excursions, walking tours and musical performances.  Facilities that are accessible to students include an indoor swimming pool, basketball court, gym, sauna, tennis courts, soccer field.

Housing

Students stay in double occupancy dormitories on campus with weekly cleaning and linen change; two meals a day are provided in the student cafeteria. Homestays are available upon request and provide one meal, breakfast.

Eligibility Requirements

The program is open to students at any undergraduate level with a 2.5 GPA.

Academic Levels

No prior language is required.  Language courses are offered at all levels.

Costs

$5,118 for CCIS, $5,418 for non-CCIS (8 weeks)

$2,884 for CCIS and $3,184 for non-CCIS (3 weeks)

Truman requires a $300 deposit, deducted from total amount due, upon acceptance to the program.

Costs Included

Instructional costs, CCIS and sponsor fees, room and 1/2 board (only one meal is offered at the homestay,) cultural excursions, visa invitation, health insurance

Costs Not Included

Estimated: Personal and food costs ($1,700), airfare ($1,500), passport, visa, single occupancy room option ($250)
